Auto China 2026 Flash Report Insights

At present, the automotive market in China is busy. To say the least.

All automakers are working to bring products to market in order to maintain or regain lost market share. Customer value and speed to market for novel technologies are widely seen as key strengths of Chinese automakers, and are often cited as reasons why non-Chinese automakers have been losing share.

Auto China 2026 provided an update on the latest technologies being brought to market in China by both international and domestic automakers.

In 2026, Auto China was held for the first time in a dual-venue format, spanning the China International Exhibition Center and the China National Convention Center in Beijing. The event featured more than 2,000 exhibiting companies and around 1,400 vehicles, including 181 global premieres and 71 concept cars. Chinese automakers accounted for over 60% of model premieres, with BYD, Chery, and Geely each occupying exclusive, independent halls.

Chinese automakers showcased a wide range of technologies, including 800V EV architectures, shared BEV and EREV platforms, high-performance chips, advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), and more centralized computing architectures.

ADAS partnerships were a common theme. Suppliers involved in the development and operation of robotaxi or robovan fleets were particularly active—for example, Momenta, Geely, and WeRide. ADAS “world models,” leveraging AI learning with claimed improvements in system capability, were announced by Nio, Momenta, and Huawei.

Automakers also appear to be recognizing the potential benefits of more centralized computing platforms. Demonstrations showed how linking cockpit, ADAS, and body domains can enable new AI agents to execute cross-scenario and cross-domain tasks. Leapmotor, for instance, demonstrated a multimodal AI agent capable of executing such tasks, while Volcano Engine and Banma presented similar cross-domain AI capabilities.

Cockpit and user experience technologies were also prominent. Huawei demonstrated a 3-in-1 multimodal system capable of full-cabin vital signs monitoring, while Aito showcased a 32-inch roof-mounted screen supporting dual-user split-screen functionality and stage-tracking lighting. Many other examples of similar features were also on display.

Non-Chinese automakers, in particular, are focused on restoring market share. Most outlined China-specific strategies at the event. For example, Hyundai announced its “In China, For China, To Global” approach, while Toyota presented its “with China, for China” strategy. These strategies typically include establishing R&D centers in China and forming targeted partnerships with Chinese companies, particularly in ADAS and cockpit ecosystems.

Based on the announcements and trends at Auto China 2026, it is clear that the push to bring new features and technologies to market is not slowing. Development of centralized software-defined vehicle (SDV) architectures continues, higher-performance batteries are becoming available, and AI is being applied in increasingly substantive ways.

My personal highlight, however, was much simpler. Automakers demonstrated new dimmable glass features—far less complex than centralized computing platforms or roof-mounted screens. I often find myself driving with the sun directly to my left or right, and the sun visor is not sufficient to block the glare. It can be highly distracting, and dimmable glass would make a meaningful difference. A simple but valuable feature.

To some extent, as outlined in our report, it seems that the products demonstrated at Auto China 2026 are becoming more and more similar. If value and new technologies are the route to selling vehicles (and therefore recovering market share) then manufacturers are competing on less significant parameters. Offering more and more features may be leaving automakers with diminishing returns and not offering value.”
