One Year Until Euro 7: What OEMs Need to Know

In just one year, all new type approved M and N vehicle models will need to meet the Euro 7 emissions regulations, which take effect in November 2026. The new standards bring a wider set of legal responsibilities for OEMs, reaching beyond current emissions rules to include anti-tampering measures, security obligations, and cybersecurity requirements that sit alongside the UNECE R155 Cyber Security Regulation.

Euro 7 applies to all light and heavy-duty vehicles (M and N), and all powertrains. It introduces new obligations for EV battery lifespan, condition and performance, as well as limits on brake and tyre particulate emissions and protections against odometer alterations.


For OEMs and system suppliers, this means developing new test regimes, internal design standards and comprehensive risk and vulnerability assessments for all affected vehicle systems. Compliance will require a structured review of:


  • Supplier specifications

  • Testing and validation processes

  • Specific risk assessment and reporting frameworks


In addition, OEMs must stay alert to emerging external threats from outside the established supply chain. The potential for making profit from the sale of tampering, reprogramming or “adjustment devices” will inevitably tempt some tool vendors to sell tools, devices or services to allow the unscrupulous to change or input data.


EV batteries and high-value drivetrain components are likely to attract increasing attention from criminal groups, as demand for lower-cost or reconditioned “green” parts expands. With such high potential resale profits, the spread of illicit technology is almost inevitable.
