Although many advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) have been proven effective at improving safety and driver comfort, winning driver trust in higher levels of automation remains a significant challenge for the automotive industry.
Even at current levels of automation, drivers (and other road users) can feel unnerved by the robotic driving style of an autonomous vehicle. Sudden changes of direction, a lack of empathy with other road users, and a perceived lack understanding of the ‘bigger picture’ often leave drivers feeling skeptical.
A new industry consortium has come together to design, develop and test an autonomous vehicle that emulates the driving style of a proficient human driver, including natural control and path planning.
The HumanDrive project is part of CAV2 (Connected and Autonomous Vehicles 2), co-funded by Innovate UK, the UK’s Innovation Agency.
Research begins with modelling of real-life driving to better understand the characteristics of safe human driving behavior. The project will end with a real-world test of a fully built prototype (automated to SAE level 4) being tested over more than 100 miles in a variety of road and traffic conditions.
The need for the vehicle to send and receive data - and handing over greater control to the vehicle - substantially increases the risk and potential impact of a cyber-attack.
