On we go with our first briefing for this busy week and wow, it did not disappoint!
1. The announcements made by
keynotes such as LG and BoschGlobal have already caught tons of attention and
the show is just heating up. BoschGlobal has done something that many find
nearly impossible; reinventing a technology that has been around in the car
industry for almost 100 years. Their new LCD smart screen sun visor has caught
many people by surprise but so far is getting awesome reviews. The screen uses
facial recognition to only block out glare that is directly in your line of
sight while giving you the ability to see through the remaining amount of the
visor. By using this LCD screen Bosch has made it so you no longer are
obstructing your view of the road when putting your sun visor down.
SBD Insight: We are starting to see more and more use cases involving
facial recognition and an in-cabin driver facing camera. The more relevant use
cases that can be generated, the quicker we will see deployment of driver
monitoring for level 2 systems using such cameras.
2. Next up we have Qualcomm, who
has surprised us greatly with all of their initial announcements and new
products they are bringing to market in 2020. Between their new Snapdragon
mobile PC with 5G capability to their Car-to-cloud services they are taking
full advantage of the press surrounding CES. We can’t wait to dive deeper into the
Car-to-cloud services to see all the features it has to offer but so far we are
seeing great promise for a new competitor in automotive software. Not only are
they offering OTA updates for their software but also are introducing in-car
payment structures such as on-demand unlocking of features as well as
SBD Insight: The ‘on-demand unlocking of features’ trend continues as
OEMs look for further ways of revenue generation from vehicles both new and
used. As OTA becomes more widely adopted, vehicle ownership could shift further
towards the subscription models we see today with media, grocery shopping, and
3. Fiserv and ExxonMobil announced
they are teaming up to bring consumers in-car payment at over 11,000 Exxon and
Mobil stations in the US. This may be one of the biggest announcements we heard
today, ExxonMobil and Fiserv have revealed that they will be implementing
payments through Alexa enabled vehicles. Supposedly vehicles that are equipped
with Alexa, Echo Auto, or other Alexa-enabled mobility devices the owners will
simply need to say “Alexa, pay for gas” when they are pulling up to the pump.
No additional sign-ups to apps or software and no separate account for payments
will be needed, everything will be billed right through Amazon Pay and the
accounts you already have on file. Fiserv’s digital commerce tech will be able
to activate your pump as well as ensure a secure payment transaction all
through your vehicle and the pump.
SBD Insight: Convenience and security will be two of the key benefits
as more and more services can be paid for from within your own vehicle. For
those in less favorable climates, not having to wait outside the vehicle whilst
payment is confirmed will provide benefit. And by removing the need to swipe a
card, the risk of card details being stolen at the pump goes down.
Today was a great press day with
tons of announcements already made, make sure to check back in with us tomorrow
morning to get your updates for all of tonight’s announcements and press
